Old movie review: The Ring Oct. 19th, 2009 @ 10:27 pm
Here's another movie review I did a few years ago.

The Ring

Last weekend I saw the Ring. Well let me say that particular movie is OVERATED!!!!!!!!! The ending was rediculous. Not to spoil anything, but let's just say that they give no reason to why one thing makes another thing the way it is (I know, it sounds confusing). The only parts that had me at the edge of my seat was the very beginning and a part towards the end. The story seems so unfinished. You can tell it was a remake of a Japanese film, since the story is extremely confusing and offers no full explanation what-so-ever. Hell, there isn't even any explanation as to how the tape came to be.

I give "The Ring" a 6 out of 10. The story was all over the place and the ending sucked. If you make an ending, at least be sure to explain why doing one thing causes another.

Old movie review of mine: Trekkies Oct. 18th, 2009 @ 08:56 pm
This is a review I wrote years ago. I'll be posting more of them later this week.

Trekkies!

There is a documentary that has been out for years that has never failed in showing just how interesting the human race is. That documentary, my friends, is called "Trekkies". I first saw it when I was station in Diego Garcia. The rental place (which, for being on a tiny, tiny island was actually decent) had it, and it perked my curiosity, so I rented it. I watched it two or three times I enjoyed it so much. I eventually bought the DVD version of it. I have watched it somewhere between 5 and 7 times, most recently being last weekend. So without further ado, here is my review (I'm a poet and don't even know it. Snoogins!).

"Trekkies" is a documentary about fans and fanatics of Star Trek (yes, aparently ther eis a difference between "fan" and "fanatic", as the movie actually states). In it there are a plethora of people from all walks of life, showing their devotion to Star Trek in many different ways. One such person is a woman who is a head of a Star Trek fan club/federation (and, watch the film), who ALWAYS has her Tricorder and rank insignias on her, even when she's at work. She was also a Juror at the Whitewater trial (and yes, she wore a star trek uniform each day she was at the trial). Another person is a dentist who has his whole operation decked out in Star Trek memorabilia. The good doctor himself, his wife, the dental hygenists, and the receptionist all wear Star Trek uniforms. Oh yeah, and his wife is a hotty (especially in her Doctor Troy get-up). Those are just two examples of many in the film. Other things that are discussed are things such as the history of the first Star Trek convention, the "trekkie vs. trekker" arguement, who everyone's favorite captian is (mine is Jean Luke Pikard), and stories from the cast of the many Star Trek shows. One more note on that; as I expected long before seeing this movie, the woman who plays the female captain (the name escapes me right now) IS one of those types that spouts nothing but psycho-babble. Watching her talk in the movie both cracks me up and makes me want to pull my hair out.

The pace of the movie is excellent! There are no periods of dryness, and everyone is shown in a rather possitive light. Before watching the movie you may think "these people have no lives", but afterwords you may realise that they are no different then any other type of fanatic. Also, unlike many other documentaries, this one doesn't lose track of it's subject. Oh yeah, incase you're wondering, you don't have to know crap about Star Trek to enjoy "Trekkies".

I give this documentary a 10 out of 10! That's right, a perfect score! Why? Because there is absolutely nothing wrong with this film. Go out and buy/rent it now!

Creation 2009 Jun. 29th, 2009 @ 11:05 pm
Well yesterday I returned from Creation Festival 2009. It has been 9 years since I last went and therefor decided to go with some people from my church.

It was fun, and I plan on going for a forth time either in 2010 or 2011, but it will never be as fun as when I was a teenager. Mainly because it's mainly teenagers and there parents/youth leaders that attend. I really enjoyed myself, though. Especially friday and saturday.

I heard some great bands that I (probably) never heard before. My personal favorites were Skillet and Third Day. There were some great bands at the Fridge Stage as well. Children 18:3 was probably my favorite on that stage.

I want to be a better christian, but boy is it hard. One message, though, that even though I've heard about it many, many times before but hasn't really gotten into my head until a few days ago is that one of the main parts about christianity is "love". Jesus taught us to love. The sermon on the mount explains it better then anything (as far as coming from Jesus's own mouth). That doesn't mean that you have to approve of everything. It means that you make sacrifices for others. That's love. Saying that you approve of gay marriage isn't love (just like saying you're against it isn't hate). It's about being willing to help others, make sacrifices for other, etc.

I'm really getting more and more into many christian metal bands. Ones that I would highly recommend to anyone are:

Barnabas (great hard rock/metal band from the 80s that were better then the majority of bands that came out in that decade. My second favorite christian metal band)

Tourniquet (my favorite christian metal band. Speed metal at it's finest. Plus you can't go wrong with neo-classical guitar licks)

Stryper (yeah, they looked goofy but I love their music and the message behind it)

Mortification (they're early death metal stuff is great and there more current stuff isn't bad either)

My scooter Apr. 29th, 2009 @ 06:33 am
Back in January I bought a motor-scooter. It's a 2009 Piaggio BV250 Tourer. I absolutely love it and have already put over 1,600 miles on it. It's now my primary use of transportation for work and whenever I'm' going somewhere without a passenger.

So much has happened... Mar. 9th, 2009 @ 10:18 pm
So many things have happened since my last post.

THE NEW POTUS

First off, as I stated in my last post, I gave President Obama a chance to prove himself and hoped that he would be great even though I didn't vote for the guy. I can't say I'm impressed. He indeed is the socialist that many, many of us have suspected him to be. He seems to want to turn us into Europe. I could go on forever about all the bailouts, but I won't as I don't intend on having this whole thing be a political post.

THE SCOOTER

I finally decided to get a scooter. Yeah, I wanted a motorcycle for a long time but decided to go with a scooter first. The gas I save riding it to work, the church, and anywhere that I go when Lori does come with. I love riding it. It's a 2009 BV 250 Tourer. Hopefully I'll have some pics to post on here soon.

THE HARRISBURG TEA PARTY

Last saturday Matt, Andrea, Lori, and I attended the Harrisburg Tea Party. The sign that I made for the event (and got a lot of thumbs-up) pretty much summed up what I thought of the whole "stimulus"; THE NEW LAW: PAY YOUR MORTGAGE, PAY A FINE OF $75 BILLION. Had a great time.

THE CHURCH

I'm being far more active in my church. I go to church, sunday school, and an evening Bible study on sundays, the men's saturday morning prayer breakfast on the saturdays that they have it, and I plan on going to the Bible studay and church dinners on wednesday. I even voluteered this year to help organize the church going to Creation this year. I also told my pastor that I would like to be an active member and will be starting the new member classes next month.

THE NOVEL

Work is slowly but surely being done on the novel that I'm writing. I'll spend even more time on it once the weather is warmer so that I can sit out on the front porch and write.

» Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.
In one week we will have a new POTUS. Barack Obama. Unlike the libs that didn't even bother giving GW Bush a chance, I will give Obama a chance. I'm a republican but I honestly hope Obama becomes a great President. For me it's country far over party. Unfortunately it seems like he'll be a mix between Carter and Clinton. I do like, though, that he kept Gates as the SoD. One of the things that ticked me off about Bush is him keeping Rummy on as SoD for so long. At least he FINALLY listened to the generals and went with the surge. Now we are kicking major ass in Iraq. Hoo-rah!

Bush. I think history will be kinder to him then the main stream media and Hollywood have been. Yeah, going to Iraq was a mistake and his amnesty deal regarding illegal immigration ticks me off, but he was a man of conviction and nominated two excellent Supreme Court judges. Also, his tax cuts (which, contrary to what the media says, helped more then just the "rich") helped the economy big time. Yes, the economy is crapping out now, but notice that it didn't start crapping out until after over a year that the democrats took over both houses in congress. Of course, Bush is partly responsible because of him not knowing how to use a veto pen.

If you can't tell, I get real conflicted when it comes to Bush. Still, he's a good man.

Now it's Obama's turn. Here's hoping for 4 years of impressing me.

Okay, here's what's pissing me off about the media this week (yeah, I know, it's something different of week).

As probably the whole world knows by know, John Travolta's and Kelly Preston's son Jett has passed away. Here's what really pisses me off. The media KEEPS TALKING ABOUT IT!!! I think Travolta and Preston are having a hard enough time dealing with the loss of their son without the media talking about it 24/7. Let them grieve in peace and stop constantly bringing it up.
» I am Clin-Ton. All shall kneel before me.
Wow, it's been a long time since I last posted anything on here.

Quick update since my last post:

Will and Amber have a newborn son. Matt and Andrea's infant daughter is so friggin' adorable and tall. My brother now has a daughter that was born in June.

Vacation was nice this summer. Lori and I went to Rahobeth with her family again. Had a great time but this time I didn't catch any fish.

I'm FINALLY going to see Metallica live. I bought my ticket to see them yesterday. I"ll be seeing them in Philly in January. Just wish the tickets weren't so damn expensive. I saw Maiden for half the price.

I'm be seeing the mighty SIGH in concert on monday. They are (1) my favorite Japanese band and (2) my favorite black metal band.

As for the 2008 election, McCain/Palin has my vote.
» This has been one wonderful Easter!
This past Easter day has become more important to me then any before. Sunday during our Easter Service I believe I felt the Spirit go through me! It's not often anymore that I really sing at church, mainly because I'm terrible at singing. On this Easter, though, the Spirit has woken me up! Even though I still have this cold that I've had for 2 weeks, I was singing and enjoying every minute of it!

Call me corny but if that makes me corny then call me an ear!

These past several years (and by several I mean 10) my spirituality has gone down the gutter and I just haven't been the Christian I should be. I've done many things I'm not proud of, particularly in my navy days. I haven't been reading my Bible like I used to. I haven't been praying like a should, particularly prayers of thanksgiving. I've been too analytical in regards to some things in the Bible (*cough* Genesis *cough*) to the point of depressing myself.

These past several months things have been better. I'm active in the men's Bible study, my Sunday School class, and some other events. But of course that is all piddly because I haven't been giving God the praise that He deserves nearly enough. It's rare that I pray anymore. It isn't like it was during my first year in the Navy where I would pray and read my Bible diligently. I haven't been living to please Christ.

Sunday, I stayed after church and prayed at the alter, talked to my pastor, and then he and one of the deacons prayed for/with me at the alter. I tell you, it was quite a feeling and I knew that Christ was listening and answering.

I spoke to my wife afterwords (she was home, sick) and I told her what happened and to let me know if she sees me slding!

Praise Him!!!

» "Cut me, Mick!"
Well last week I turned 29. On year left until the big 3-0. I feel out of shape but that’s less to do with my age and more to do with (1) my eating habbits and (2) no longer working at Dayton parts (it’s been 3 months). I plan on starting Weight Watchers with Lori next week (she’s started this week). I don’t really feel old except when I see teenagers today. Plus, my twisted, somewhat obsurd sense of humor makes me feel like I’m still in high school.

Top 5 albums of 2007

Now’s the time for my top five albums of 2007. With the exception of #1, none of the other albums are in any particular order.

1. Tori Amos – American Doll Posse

Okay, now I’m not a big Tori Amos fan but I do enjoy a lot of her music. With that said, American Doll Posse is absolutely brilliant! It’s such a varied mix of styles, with songs that will get stuck in your head for weeks (don’t worry, they’re great songs). Southern rock, 80’s pop/new wave, classic Tori, and many other styles in this album. Plus, my favorite song off the album, “Digital Ghost”, is a Dream Theater-esque balled. I’ve listened to this album more then any other 2008 album.

2. Dream Theater – Systematic Chaos

This album is deffinantly a grower. It’s also their most varied album and perhaps their best album since Scenes From a Memory (still my favorite). Although it’s only got 8 songs, it’s got variety. The highlights, in my opinion, are songs such as the Metallica-ish “Constant Motion”, the epic “In the Presence of My Enemies Part 2”, the Muse-ish “Profits of War”, and my favorite “The Dark Eternal Night”. Sure, some of the songs are too long, but this is Dream Theater. Plus, those long songs are still excellent songs. Heck, this album is even number three on my list of favorite Dream Theater albums.

3. Sigh – Hangman’s Hymn

Sigh never fail to impress, and what they did this time was set a completely new standard for symphonic black metal. That’s saying something for a band who’s never done a symphonic black metal album before. I should note that even though they don’t’ play with a symphony, it is indeed symphonic black metal. The production is superb, and so much so that Mirai has decided to have their previous album, “Gallow’s Gallery” remixed by the same guy who mixed Hangman’s Hymn.

4. Megadeth – United Abominations

Megadeth does it again! Just like The World Needs a Hero and The System Has Failed, this one is a grower. It just gets better and better with each listen. Hell, it could be argued that it’s a Christian metal album.

5. Nightwish – Dark Passion Play

As much as I miss Tarja’s vocals, their current vocalist does well with the songs from the new album. With that said, the song writing on the new album is right up there with albums such as Once, Wishmaster, and Century Child. Nightwish has not lost their style one bit. It should also be said that DPP is their most varied album. Plus it’s a great segue album for those who love celtic must but have never heard Nightwish. That’s right, there are at least two, if not more, songs with major celtic undertones in terms of style.
» CAPTAIN PLANET!!!!!!!!!
Fellow "Robot Chicken" fans will get that;)

Anyways, since I haven't made a post in forever, this one is going to be several in one. First, though, is something that is royally pissing me off.

Enough of the bullshit!

Well apparently there are some people that are pissed off at either Lori or myself and don't even have the sack to tell that they are pissed and why. In fact, the only way these people seem to want us to know that they are pissed is to....well.....do something you would expect a junior high school person to do.

Anyways, we've had enough. Anyone who's pulling the stuff that's going on now, tell us when your mad at us that you are mad and why, or don't ever come to us at all. We don't need such petty people in our lives.

It's stuff like this why I like to play most things by ear instead of planning stuff with people that may be on again/off again pissed off at me, my wife, or any of our other friends. It's not just one person that's doing this, either.

Also, if anyone is pissed at me, that's one thing. I do piss people off from time to time. My wife, on the other hand, is someone who will give you the shirt off her back, outside, in the middle of February in the friggin' snow. If she ever messes up, it's always by accident. She's not vindictive, cruel, or mean-spirited. She doesn't deserve this kind of aggravation. Anyone who knows her knows this.

Thank God that we have some friends out there that when they are angry they tell you and when they are angry at you it isn't for some really petty shit. I'm very greatful. You all know who you are, or at least I hope you do, and we love having you all in our lives.

The new job

Well I've been at my new job for over a month now. Of course, for those that don't know I now work for the State. I like the job, I like the department and bureau I work in, and I like the people I work with/for.

August vacation

In August Lori and I went stayed with her family in a house they rented for a week near Rahobeth (sp?) Beach. It was perhaps the most relaxing week I have ever had. During that week I rent fishing twice with Lori's brother and stepdad. The beach was beautiful (Dewy Beach). Also, something that was absolutely wonderful was the fact that our nephew Wesley started bonding with Lori and I.
» The mighty SIgh makes yet another masterpiece!!!!!!!!
Yesterday I picked up Sigh's Hangman's Hymn. MASTER-FREAKIN_PIECE!!!!! With Hail Horrow Hail they set a new standard for avant-garde metal, with Imagionary Sonicscape they set a new standard for psychodelic metal, and with Hangman's Hymn they have raised the bar extremely high for symphonic black metal. No other SBM-style album even holds a candle to it.
» FINALLY!!!
http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B000PHW236/ref=s9_asin_image_1-1966_g1/104-3727613-3186314?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=0RJ6Y64F1ENDWN994KDR&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=288448401&pf_rd_i=507846

I have the original soundtrack but my big gripe about it is that it didn't have the entire score. Last month they FINALLY released the soundtrack with the entire score! I'll be picking this up tomorrow!
» Drawings from the past.
Well here are some of the things that I drew way-back-when. Several more to come.

These first few were drawn back in high school. I was really into both Beavis & Butthead and Mortal Kombat.

These last two are ones that I drew back in 2003 (or was it 2002) when I was out at sea. The first one is the Doritos woman and the second one is Anna Kornikova.

» An old journal entry on heroes.
Keeping with the theme of journal entries and school papers of old, here is another one from 1996.

Last night I was watching a weekly news program. Datelin, I think. On this particular program they were talking about this female doctor that found a way to make it so that people, basically children, that normally would have needed to have a limb amputated were able to keep the limb and have it fully functional. She did this by taking the nerves of an organ doner and connecting them to the severed nerve or nerves of the would-be amputated arm or leg. So far this procedure was done only four times. To me that doctor is a hero as well as all the other doctors that save loives. Other heroes are police officers, but only the good ones, no the crooked ones. They put their lives on the line to keep the streets safe. People like that black woman who sat in the front of the bus even though at that time the front was reserved for whites only. She was told to move but wouldn't budge. She is a true hero. The rescuers at the Oklahoma City bombing are all heroes. Abraham Lincoln was a hero for abolishing slaver.

So even though when people are aked what comes to mind when they think of heroes Superman and Batman come to mind, the true heroes are the ones that are protecting our streets, saving the lives of the ill, and standing up for their rights.

I can't believe I forgot Rosa Park's name. Then again, I've never been good with names.

I still feel the same way, of course. Infact, something that really bothers me is when an athlete will be considered a "hero" just be he or she is good at a particular sport.
» Another old entry.
Here is a journal entry I did for my english class my senior year in high school.

9/2/96

Have you ever discovered that you were going to have to get braces, a cavity filled, or even your wisdom teeth taken out? If you have, then you also probably remember asking your friends how it feels to have such an opperation done. Some of them would tell you that there was nothing really to worry about but at least 65% to 75% of them would tell you the worst things. So when you would go to have the procedure done, you would feel very shakey and nervous, hoping that the place it was going to be done at would blow up before you even got there, but then about a week after you thought it was no "biggy".

Well, I experienced such a thing last friday. Before the opperation I would ask everyone that I could how bad it was when they had their wisdom teeth taken out. Alot of them told me that after the operation I would not be able to open my mouth that wide and that my cheeks would be very swollen, especially since all four teeth were impacted. One person even told me that he would come over everyday to laugh at me because I laughted at him when his were taken out and he had chipmunk cheeks. So I was nervous until the doctor put in the anistecia. One second I was wide awake, the next second I was out cold, then the next second awake again with gauze in the back of my mouth. I could barely move my jaw. I saw my father and asked, "Dad, is that you?". He acknowledged and told me not to talk. I was in a different room but didn't realize it till I woke up again. Then my dad and someone else lifted me out the chair and into the truck. I was really staggering.

When I got home, I went to sleep. About one or two hours later I took my pills and went back to sleep, but when I woke up again I noticed that I could move my jaw almost completely and that my face didn't swell up at all. So that friday night a friend of mine and I went to see "The Crow: City of Angels". So my entire experience wasn't that bad after all.

I learned two things out of this. Don't always listen to the negative part of things and never write a journal entry while being sedated by a pain killer.

» "Battle of the Bands"
Okay, I know I just made a post about old school journal entries of mine, but I found something that I was looking for earlier.

A friend of mine is currently writing a book. When I found out, I decided to start writing a book that I first started a year ago. Well, by started I mean "wrote some plot points". Now I have been inspired to start again.

With that I said, here is a short story I wrote back in my highschool days. I think this one was written back in '94 or '95. Keep in mind that it was for a class and that it's not exactly a masterpiece, but it has metal in it so some of you may be interested in reading it.

BATTLE OF THE BANDS

It was in the middle of a tour that Metallica and Megadeth have been doing together. They had just gotten done with a councert and headed backstage.

The members of the two bands sat down and conversed when suddenly James Hetfield, vocalist and guiatrist for Metallica, says "Hey, does anybody want to have some beer?"

Everyone decides to have some.

While everyone is having a couple of beers, Dave Mustaine, vocalist and guitarist for Megadeth and who is at the time drunk off his butt, says with his speech slured "Man, I am so glad that I'm not in Metallica anymore because Metallica sucks."

Then Lars Ulrich, drummer for Metallica and who is also drunk at the time, says "Shut up before I shove these drumsticks so far up your butt that they'll be coming out your nose."

"Yea? Well I'll show you who needs to shut up," says Mustain and punches Lars in the jaw.

Krik Hammet, lead guiatrist for Metallica, says "Hey, don't you hit Lars like that," and picks a chair up and hits Mustain with it.

All of the sudden everyone from both bands is duking it out. Bottles are being smashed on heads and teeth are being knocked out. While this is all happening, a roady, who was watching the whole thing infront of his own eyes, called a nearby radion station to tell them what was going on. The radio station decides that this is great info so they decide to anounce it on the radio.

Meanwhile Pantera, another metal band that was on it's way to a hotel from a concert they just performed at were listening to that very same station at the time and heard the news.

"Hey, why don't we go there and get into the fight just for fun? Besides we have nothing better to do," says Dimebag Darrel, guitarist for Pantera. Everyone agreed and so they headed over to the stadium that the fight is going on at.

So now Pantera, Metallica, and Megadeh are duking it out when Jason Newstead, bassist for Metallica, says "Wait a minute! Why are we fighting? We should be partying, not fighting."

Everyone else comes to their senses, appologizes to each other and then decides to join their bands together to make the ultimate metal band. Mega Panterrica.

» Looking at yourself from the past
Today I decided to look through some of the stuff from highschool, junior high, and my Navy days. It's interesting to look back and read some of the stuff that I have written back then. So sometimes on this blog I will post stuff from the past. The stuff from the past will be in itallics

These three are all from 1994. Excuse any poor grammar in these. Anyways, these were for an english class in 1994.

Here is the first one

8/29/94

My name is Keith Horning. I like to play video games and hang after school. My favorite kind of music is heavy metal and alternative. My favorie band is Metallica. My favorite arcade game is Martal Kombat II. Last summer I did not do much. I mainly hung out at the mall with my friend Chad. In August 5 - 13 I stated at a guy's who works with myt dad's house for a week to watch his dog while he and his family went on vacation.

Not exactly revitting, but you get an idea of the type of person I was my sophomore year in high school.

The next one...

I think society has been at it's worst in the last five years. When everyone turns on the TV to watach the news you hear about someone being killed. For example, remember the Minendez brothers and how they killed there parents or when a man raped a woman and chopped both of her arms off? How about that woman that killed her two children and said that they were kidknapped. There are even people getting killed here in Dauphin Country. There's the high school student that killed a taxi driver in Harrisburg and the high school student that killed a teacher or how about when that man got killed in Red Roof Inn. And how can we expect to get rid of people like these when there are crooked cops on the job such as the officers that beat Rodny King or the possiblity that an officer could have set up O.J. Simpson and even though yesterday I heard that the Attorney General is finally trying to do someone about this, crime will never truly be terminated.

Oh boy. This shows how back then I had no idea that the news media sensionalized everything. Back then I thought everything in the world was bad because that's all the media reported on.

Now for the last one.

If there is anything that I regret it is not doing my work. When I don't do my work my grades go down. This seems to happen in most of my classes. One of the subjects that I have been doing good at is American Government and Citizenship and I only miss one or two homework assignments per marking period in that class, which if you would have seen the grades on the subjects that I haven't been doing my homework in you would see what a big difference the homework makes. Right now I've been doing better in my classes but it still isn't my best.

Back then, not doing my homework was my major flaw. But as that entry also shows, the tenth grade was also the beginning of my interest in politics and such. My all-time favorite class was American Government.
